A Few New Commandments...

As some of you may know... I am a Ferret Lover. So are the guys I live with. Smart men. We are a "Rescue Home". When someone needs to re-home a Ferret, our phone rings. Sadly, most cases of re-homing are a result of terrible, wicked, horrid abuse... the term "rescue" takes on a very serious tone. Currently we have 4 "Fuzzies" living with us. I am deeply in love with all of my lil girls... they truly hold my heart. They also have their own sets of Commandments.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
10 Commandments of a Ferret
1. If I like something, it's mine.
2. If it's on my paw, it's mine.
3. If I can take something away from you, it's mine.
4. If something belonged to you a few minutes ago, it doesn't matter, it's mine.
5. If it was mine, it was never meant to be yours, so, it's mine anyway.
6. If I am stealing something, everything and all pieces are mine.
7. If it looks like mine, it's mine.
8. If I saw it first, it's mine.
9. If you are touching something and let it fall, then automatically, it's mine.
10. If it's broken it's yours and as soon as it's fixed, it's mine.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ferrets love to get into everything. By nature, they're very loving, and extremely curious lil creatures. They also love to "steal" things and hide them. Fuzzies are the most amusing and entertaining animal I've ever encountered. If you're considering bringing one or more of these amazing creatures into your life, please think of adoption from a shelter or a Vet. The following Commandments are what a Ferret would say to you, if they could talk...

10 Commandments for
Responsible Ferret Guardians

1. My life is likely to last 5-7 years, any separation from you will be painful. When you decide to make me part of your life, let it be forever. If at some time in our lives you cannot keep me, make sure that my new home will provide what I need and will supply the love, care, and socialization I crave.
2. Let me teach you to understand me and what I need from you. I will test you from time to time to make sure you remember the lessons.
3. Keep me safe and secure. Protect me from others that would harm me. I depend on you. You are my lifeline.
4. Talk to me and cuddle me. Your voice is as enjoyable to my ears as birds sweetly singing are to yours. Your gentle touch is as warm as the soft rays of the sun.
5. I need fresh nutritional food and fresh water, warm clean blankets to cuddle in during winter, cool clean blankets to lay on in the heat of the summer. My litter box and cage should be cleaned daily. Hugs and social time each and every day. Do no put me in a cage outside. I belong inside with my family.
6. I will make many mistakes. I am not perfect. Be gentle when you correct me.
7. Don't get angry at me. I am an intelligent, joyous, curious creature and WILL get into things. Know that this is how I am. I am not trying to be destructive. I depend on you to watch out for me and protect me from danger.
8. Never hit me or shake me. I am small and can be hurt very easily. When you are angry at someone or something else, do not take it out on me. I have nothing to give you but love and joy. This is my true nature.
9. Take special care of me as I grow older. I may play less but I stil love you just as much as when I was young enough to dance. Monitor me closely for I will experience ailments as I grow older.
10. When I no longer enjoy life and I am in pain with no relief, please stay with me till the end. I have given you my life and love. Don't disappoint me in my last moments here on this earth. Tell me that you love me and hold me close. Let my passing be gentle. ~ Always remember that I love you. ~

My oldest Ferret, Mocha, has become very sick. She is 5 and a half years old and has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. There have been many trips to the Vet. Many tears have been shed. She is so frail, now, having gone from her normal weight of 2.5 lbs. down to 1.3 lbs. She moves slowly and is no longer able to run and dance and play with the other girls. Mocha still has a good appetite and remains very alert. She does very well taking her medication. Mocha has been spending most of her time, now, in bed with me. She loves to burrow into my chenille bathrobe and takes many of her naps there. Every now 'n then she will stick her lil pink nose out and peek... just making sure I am still there. Of course, I am. She is my sweet, old girl and it's breaking my heart to see her this way. I'm so thankful that God allowed me to find her, and be her new Mommy. She is why I've been away from blogland recently. My thanks to everyone that's visited and please forgive me for not returning the visit. I promise as soon as I can, I will catch up... but for now, my place is with my Fuzzie Mocha girl... I couldn't think of a sweeter lil nap buddy to have...
God bless...
Until another time... Pearl

Pearl,
I am so sorry to hear about Mocha. My thoughts are with you, friend.

I have never had a ferret, but have been blessed with the love of other types of pets in my life time and know what you're going through is something words can not express...

We'll all be here when you get back and now, enjoy the time you have. How wonderful Mocha is able to have a loving home and snuggle up in some chenille.

OHH How wonderful of you to do this Pearl! I am SUCH an animal lover. I love basically all animals and cannot stand for them to be abused, it just breaks my heart. You are a beautiful person to do this. I just wish the poor babies didnt have to suffer :(

Big Hugs,

Hi Pearl, As I was reading your post I shed a tear. Your Mocha is very lucky to have you ... I too have my Rocki a 16yr old dalmatian who has been a constant companion. His health is failing...he's now blind and has a hard time walking. But still no matter where I am , he is there at my feet..my constant companion. I know the bond you can have with a pet is a special one. Know that Mocha loves you very much and is thankful for the wonderful life you have given her.

hugs

She is so blessed to have you and your family to take care of her.
