Her Name Might Be Cocoa, But That Doesn't Mean...

she should eat it...

Here's what my
Monday night was like...

After going to the drug store to pick up some
prescriptions, my Dear Husband came home
with a candy bar for each of the boys,
and myself... He's very thoughtful like that...

My Husband and oldest son then left for work...
I was upstairs, & my youngest son was downstairs...
he was on what we call "Cocoa Duty"...

Cocoa is my mixed breed Puppy...
She's the newest rescue in our home...

My son had left his unopened candy bar on
the cedar chest next to his chair in our TV room
while he went to the kitchen for a drink...
When he returned he found a few pieces of a
Hershey Bar wrapper on the floor, next to Cocoa,
who was smacking her tongue in delight...

After a very upset cell phone call to me, with
the unpleasant news, I proceeded to call our
Vet... knowing that Chocolate is supposed
to be like poison to a dog, we were pretty
concerned...
of course he was closed, but
I got the Emergency number from his
message and placed my second call for help...

The Animal E.R. woman was polite and
compassionate... I informed her of what had
happened... she asked about Cocoa's age,
weight, breed, etc. ...

Then she asked if I had any of this in the house...

Yes, I sure do...
She gave me the dosing instructions...

After getting more information about what to
do and watch for with Cocoa, I cleared some
space in the bathroom and set up an in-house
Sick Puppy Clinic...

It was not an easy task to get the hydrogen
peroxide in Cocoa, and it broke my heart
to have to do it...
then it was a sit 'n wait period...
she never did vomit...
but she sure was miserable...

While we sat around in our Sick Puppy Clinic,
I used the time to explain, again, the rules
about food around the Puppy... and about the
dangers of Chocolate for dogs...
I'm pretty sure my son learned a lesson
and will be more cautious in the future...

Not so sure I can say the same thing
about my curious Cocoa Puff...

I guess she figured since her name's Cocoa,
anything Chocolate must be Awesome!

God bless...

Until another time... Pearl

I'm very happy to report that
Cocoa Puff is feeling much better!
She slept well and woke up wagging her tail...
Thank you for all of the kind
comments, emails, and prayers

Poor little Cocoa! I hope she is doing better this morning. It is so scary when something is wrong with our fur babies because they can't tell us how they feel. Best wishes and prayers for Cocoa today because I know how special she is to you. Twyla

Oh My Gosh, Pearl...
Poor little Cocoa Puff and You...the same thing happened to Scout before Christmas, only we didn't know which dog at a Baker's chocolate baking bar...the big one...we later found out it was Scout as he was throwing up all night long. The vet told us to bring in all 3 dogs to have their tummy pumped (right!!) we just waited out at home and some how Scout survived...
I so Feel for what you went thru..
Did you get my email??
Very cute picture of Cocoa and I had to laugh!!!
Love,
Deb

Oh no! That is sure frightful and I have been there myself! When our Renoir was a puppy, my mother left a tin partially opened on our coffee table...filled with brownies...while we were out guess who enjoyed them all! I was terrified but did the same as you...called and got the same course of action...and now it has been 2 1/2 years later and he is a-okay! Hope little Cocoa is feeling better asap!

You have the most adorable puppy!! I remember about puppies. We had a Newfoundland puppy who was able to open up a package of danish, eat them and leave the wrappings on the counter.:) Needless to say I never left anything out again! He also chewed on books and my best shoes.:)
